Reaching out to Syrian Refugees Kids

South, west, North, East, Syrians flee the war to all directions… Syrian refugees came to Lebanon to find a shelter. We got a call from people from west of Lebanon asking us to witness to Syrian refugees kids. As always MELM is ready to plant the seed everywhere God opens the door for.

We prepared a day program for Syrian refugees kids in a home where they learn the alphabet, how they read and write. The Time we spent with them included games, Bible lesson, and they watch the Puzzle Club Pet Napping Mystery. The kids were overwhelmed by seeing us come a long distance to see them and show them care and love. Since they saw death everywhere and they escaped criminals who wanted to kill them, they were touched knowing that Jesus loves them and He died for them in order to save them and was risen from the dead to give them eternal life. They were so happy to receive the movie book as a gift, and at the end they begged us to come again.

We feel blessed when all our effort in serving the Lord goes in the right place. Planting the seed in the heart of these kids, will surely grow and be fruitful today and in the future.

Supporting Assyrian Christians refugees

“If anyone has material possessions and sees a brother or sister in need but has no pity on them, how can the love of God be in that person?” (1 John 3:17)

Obeying Gods’ Word, LHM—Lebanon, also known as Middle East Lutheran Ministry (MELM), continues to reach out to both Syrian and Iraqi refugees through food packages helping in fulfilling the need.

The towns of Khabur (called ‘Khaboor’ in Arabic) are mainly Assyrian Christians towns. They are located around the agricultural area surrounding the River Khabur which originates in Turkey, passes through Syria before joining the Euphrates and going to Iraq.

Chantal, an Assyrian women, was waiting in line to receive aid from the Lutheran Ministry when she told us that, “We left our home with all our belongings. We left in our pajamas as everything happened so quickly”. It was clear to us that the displacement left her traumatized.

She is not alone – thousands of Assyrians have been forced to abandon their villages along Khabur River since ISIS jihadists began their attack on the region. The atrocities that were committed by ISIS were beyond all understanding. Many of the refugees are still affected psychologically by what happened especially the women who all know of other females that were enslaved for sex.

We heard many stories from the Christian Iraqi refugees that reveal the traumatic experiences that they faced while they fled from the criminal atrocities of ISIS. The group has seized at least 11 of the 33 Assyrian villages in the region, and kidnapped more than 200 members of the ancient Christian sect, which numbered around 30,000 in Syria before the war. The villages of Khabur are empty now, there is no one left.

Most are seeking to be resettled in the West to be able to provide a better future for their families. They are very pessimistic about returning to their own home. Their exile is permanent. “Islamic State is in my village, and I’ll never go back to Iraq,” one of them told us.

MELM noticed their suffering and observed their needs and prepared holistic support packages for three hundred Iraqi families and their children. Each family received 3 kg of rice, 3 kg of wheat groats (bergol), 2 kg of sugar, 2 liters of oil, tomato sauce, 4 potions of pasta, 2 portion of Tuna fish, 2 portions of sardine, 2 portions of cheese, meat cans, Halawa, Foul, beans and salt.

Mission to Kids in Madaba, Jordan

The Old Testament narrates that one day God sent His messenger Moses to stand up on the mountain of Nebo located in MADABA region, Jordan. There, Moses set a Serpent statue made from copper as a symbol of salvation to the poisoned people who were bitten by a serpent. Through faith only whoever looked to that serpent was healed. New Testament narrate that serpent was a symbol of our Lord and savior Jesus Christ who was crucified on the cross so we could look at Him through faith and ask Him for salvation. Jesus said: Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the wilderness, so the Son of Man must be lifted up, that everyone who believes may have eternal life in him.”(John 3: 14-15)

Nowadays God called and sent the Middle East Lutheran Ministry to go again to that region MADABA to a place so close to mountain Nebo to carry the message of salvation and the meaning of the cross to the kids  who are living in that area that includes many refugees. MELM had the privilege to take part in organizing, training leaders,  and sharing the good news with a kids camp set  for Jordanian, Syrian and Iraqi kids who lives in Madaba.

The camp was full of programs that included the Salvation message through Bible lessons and stories, Christian songs; Christian sketches for kids, puppets shows, illustrations, craft, inside and outside games, movies like Puzzle Club pet napping mystery and food. Every day there was new lesson and new decoration as illustration for the lesson theme. It was so blessing time for the kids and for the leaders who served in the camp. Many kids canceled their plans to attend all the camp. They were very happy to hear about Jesus, His unconditional and ultimate love, His care to every one of them, His salvation and eternal life. They had fun and enjoyed every bit of it, they wanted the camp to last forever. We referred many of them to Sunday school programs.

When God calls, we obey; the seed was planted in the hearts of these kids, we pray that God continue His work in their lives.

Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.” (Matthew 19:14)

Reaching Out to Youth

Under the threat of death or conversion by the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), thousands of Christians have fled Syria and Iraq over the last years. Many of them resided in Lebanon and are living in great need, and the youth among them are deprived of the essential basics and are ignored by the society.

MELM saw their great need and found ways to help these youth and their Lebanese counterparts by preparing a full day program in al Naas, Bikfaya area that shows them the Christian love through its ministry and by sharing the Bible message with them.

The topic of the conference was Successful Youths in Christ. Fourteen young persons attended the conference where sermons about salvation and spiritual growth where preached. Alongside the preaching many fun and stimulating activities were held on purpose to show the youths how Christians could enjoy life while living for Christ. It was great for us to see the joy in their faces as they sang the hymns and enjoyed the outside nature competitions.

The conference has been life changing for many of these young souls. Rami one of the attendees was touched by the grace of the God and confessed Jesus as savior after hearing the word of God and seeing young people like him living a true Christian life. He told us that he never imagined people with these attributes ever existed.

Although he lives in a Christian neighborhood but unfortunately he doesn’t see Christ in any of his relatives or friends. His happiness was overwhelming and he was very excited to tell his relatives about the conference and his new life in Jesus. Others have taken decisions to serve the Lord in their churches and communities.

We also taught them about the Bible solution dial which has verses that directly deal with the different needs and situations of the person. They learned to use it for comfort and encouragement and everyone got a copy for his private use. They were happy to have the Bible dial as a gift, and they asked us to come again and teach them more about Jesus.

Another time MELM is making an outstanding impact on the new generation. We pray that this conference and everything that happened within it will give a chance for the attendees to live a Christ like life for his glory.
