Reaching out Syrian Refugees Women in their Tents in Bikaa Valey

One million, one eighty three thousand, three hundred twenty seven (1,183,327) registered Syrian refugees, women and children make up three-quarters of the refugee population, as United Nation recent statistics. In addition to this number, more than three hundred thousand entered Lebanon illegally and are not registered with the United Nations. The vast majority of these 1.5 million refugees are dependent on aid, arriving with little more than the clothes on their backs.

MELM heard the voice of the needy, and has been supporting the refugees with food and basic necessities for many months through generous donations of the donors.

The Syrian women refugees confront a difficult and challenging situation in Lebanon. This is clear in the report of ‘The International Rescue Committee’ (IRC) which identified three main challenges facing Syrian female refugees; first, the daily reality of sexual exploitation and harassment; second, the increase in domestic violence which makes them feel that their homes and tents are not places of refuge; and third, early and forced marriage in the context of displacement and dwindling resources.”

Among all that suffering MELM found the need not only to distribute food but also to take care of their spiritual and social life. Therefore, we visited a Syrian refugees camp in bikaa where “Em Mohamad” (a nickname means Mother of Mohamad) the camp chief welcomed us and invited us to her tent.

There we shared our prepared program with 35 Syrian women refugees who live in tents as well. These women when they heard about Jesus love and His respect to women in the Bible, Jesus healed many forgave many and changed hearts of many, Jesus wants to change their hearts if they believe in Him, They opened their hearts, and shared their sad stories about their situations. How they were forced to abandon everything to escape war and how it was difficult to leave their country Syria and all their possession behind to become refugees in Lebanon. While they were living in their houses, now they live in tents; they used to have good jobs, some were teachers, secretaries, factory employees, now they are jobless, and if they find a job, it will be in the fields as farmers where they pick vegetables during the harvest times treated like slaves, and get paid 4$ per day as they told us. Tears were shed as they expressed their pain hoping one day they could go back to their country and live in their homes again.

After such a session nothing could ease the hearts except prayers so we prayed putting their requests in the hand of the Lord, believing that He is listening. During the spiritual time, and since some of the women were illiterate, we distributed to them the recorded Bible on mp3 in Arabic language in addition to Christian hymns so that they may listen to the Word of God by the earphones. After all, nothing could heal their wounds except listening to God’s Word which works through the Holy Spirit in hearts. Also everyone who carry a cellphone was donated the mobile memory card that contains the recorded Bible.
